Why blogging matters to me?

On Tuesday in Communication class, we had a very interesting discussion about blogs. Most of the class didn’t seem too taken with them. Someone even remarked having read somewhere that “blogs are written by people with nothing to say and read by people with nothing to do.” I felt a little out of place with my two blogs. The discussion and the groups’ reaction made me rethink why I spend time with (library) blogs. This is what I came up with:
- To hear about news almost as they happen.
- To get a sense of what’s topical. (I’m still new in the field.)
- To get a sense of what kind of tasks librarians do, and what kinds of people librarians are (what are some of their qualities).
Why do I write a librarian blog:
- To keep track of my thoughts. It’s like a diary, but searchable. I could, of course, keep it private, but that would diminish the value of reason nr. 2.
- To keep writing, even if blog English is less formal than other types of writing.
I remain convinced that blogs have a lot to give for me, and I will continue reading. This may change when I get more experience and/or a full-time job, but at least for the time being I won’t change my habits.
