Geeky evening entertainment

The evening session was called Gadgets, Gadgets & Gaming!, and it was longer than the daytime ones. We were first treated to a bunch of new (or almost new) gadgets or services. Then the 4-man team from the Delft PL in the Netherlands told us about their trip in the States, showing and filming more [...]

Conference notes, part 4

During lunch break, I took a stroll to the Fisherman’s Wharf and back. There were several sea lions (I think) basking on the buoys, making the most incredible racket. I’ve never experienced anything like that before.
Back to the conference. How to Lose Your New Tech Librarians wasn’t really up my alley, but I figured I [...]

Conference notes, part 3

The stupidest thing is gotta be a librarian (“paying attention to detail”) misreading their conference schedule and missing the beginning of the morning’s keynote. Fortunately I wasn’t too late, for Joe Janes’s talk (Reference 2.0: Ain’t What It Used to Be… And Never Will Again) was terrific!

Michael Stephens
Amanda Etches-Johnson

Oct 29: Exhibit opening

The vendors lured people in to see their exhibits with free finger food and alcohol. A great place to mingle, which I did. I talked a little with some vendors, nibbled on cheese and dried fruit. Had a very satisfactory conversation with a librarian from Berry College (Mount Berry, GA).

Conference notes, part 2

After lunch, I listened to a presentation on The Library 2.0 Process Toolkit. I’m sorry to say this talk was too rambling. Dean Frey (Director, Red Deer Public Library, Alberta, Canada) had a very important point, though: involving the community, and not just on lip-service level. Their PDD program (Persons with Developmental Disabilities) sounds especially [...]

Conference notes, part 1

Yesterday’s keynote speaker, Lee Rainie from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, spoke animately and engagingly on 2.0 & the Internet World. Just perfect balance of humor, general principles, and information without being overwhelming.
After that, I faced a tough choice: Mary Ellen Bates, a searcher guru, on 30 search tips; David King on making [...]

Conferencing!

I’m in lovely Monterey, CA, for the Internet Librarian 2007 conference. It’s my very first conference as a librarian! (My very first conference ever, in fact, in any field, for I don’t count smaller departmental or local chapter meetings. Boy do I feel like a virgin… ;) I took my brand new, squeeky-clean laptop, mostly to take [...]
