Conference notes, part 1

Yesterday’s keynote speaker, Lee Rainie from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, spoke animately and engagingly on 2.0 & the Internet World. Just perfect balance of humor, general principles, and information without being overwhelming.
After that, I faced a tough choice: Mary Ellen Bates, a searcher guru, on 30 search tips; David King on making library 2.0 dreams come true; or Alane Wilson & Chrystie R. Hill on librarians in the networking community. Bates would’ve been great, I’m sure, but there’s also the hitch: possibly standing room only. Planning and Implementing Library 2.0 it was.
Most of David King’s (Digital Branch & Services Manager, Topeka & Shawnee County PL) points had a lot to do with common sense and planning skills. His hints (“tricks”) of what to do with individual applications were valuable. (I need to poke around in Flickr more, just for my own use!)
Strategic Approaches to Academic Libraries had two speakers with very different styles and topics. Not as concise and to-the-point as I’d hoped, but the Q&A session provided a few nice points.
Over lunch, tried connecting to the hotel the wi-fi for half an hour to no avail. Bleah. Worked offline for a bit, then decided to try once more ust before the next talk. Voila!
There are days when I just don’t fathom computers…
